“There are many CDs of church music—and not a few of Bible readings—but a CD Church Timescombining the two appears to be unique. ... A lovely gift at £9.99.”

It is a thing most wonderful
SOUTHWELL MINSTER CHOIR

Review of this recording
In the booklet notes, Hale states that “Southwell is blessed with two choristers possessing particularly characterful solo voices (James Beddoe and Benedict Inman)”. He is quite right. Much of the repertoire presented is noted for its use of solo treble voice (Mendelssohn Hear my prayer, Allegri Miserere mei, Deus, and the underrated Wesley classic The Wilderness) and they are both on superb form. Significantly, it’s not just them—the musicality of the entire treble line is clearly evident in Ireland’s Ex ore innocentium (It is a thing most wonderful), where they create and sustain a full glowing sound.
The music is presented in liturgical calendar order Lent to Easter), and it shows off many of Southwell’s strong points—as well as the trebles, the thrilling singing at the climax of Standford’s Ye choirs of new Jerusalem and the blazingly magnificent playing of Bell in Tournemire’s stunning Choral Improvisation sur le Victimae Paschali. Indeed, Bell’s handling of the organ ‘colour’ throughout the disc is outstanding, especially the slow middle section of the Tournemire.
With the variety of the repertoire, the chance to hear one of ‘The Choirboys’ before he was famous, and above all, the very high general musical standard, this disc is strongly recommended.
